Ohio operates a centralized online registration system through the Secretary of State and is known for active list-maintenance practices.

1. Eligibility (Ohio Rev. Code § 3503.01)

  • U.S. citizen.
  • 18 years old by the day of the general election (17 may vote in primary for candidates if 18 by general).
  • Ohio resident for at least 30 days before the election.
  • Not currently incarcerated for a felony — rights restored automatically upon release (§ 2961.01).
  • Not declared incompetent for voting purposes.
  • 2. How to Register

  • Online: olvr.ohiosos.gov (requires Ohio DL/ID).
  • Paper: download Form 4309 from Secretary of State, return to county Board of Elections.
  • In person: BMV, county Board of Elections, public libraries, NVRA agencies.
  • 3. Deadline

  • 30 days before Election Day (Ohio Rev. Code § 3503.19).
  • No same-day registration.
  • 4. ID Requirements

  • Provide Ohio DL/ID or last 4 of SSN.
  • At the polls (strict photo ID since 2023, HB 458): Ohio DL, state ID, military ID, US passport, or interim ID issued by BMV. Utility bills and bank statements no longer accepted for in-person voting.
  • 5. College Students

  • May register at school address; affidavit may be required to establish residency.
