How do I register to vote in Louisiana?

Federal & State Law Editorial TeamLast reviewed: 2026-05-17

Louisiana revised its felony disenfranchisement statute with Act 636 in 2018, allowing many people on probation or older parole to register, though restrictions remain.

1. Eligibility (La. Const. art. I, § 10; La. R.S. § 18:101)

  • U.S. citizen.
  • 17 years old to register, 18 by Election Day to vote.
  • LA resident.
  • Not under an order of imprisonment for a felony, UNLESS: (a) you have not been incarcerated for 5+ years under the order and (b) you are not on parole/probation for a conviction of a sex offense (Act 636 of 2018; La. R.S. § 18:102(A)(1)(b)).
  • Not under a judgment of full interdiction.
  • 2. How to Register

  • Online: GeauxVote.com (requires Louisiana DL/state ID).
  • Paper: mail to the Registrar of Voters in your parish.
  • In person: parish Registrar of Voters, Office of Motor Vehicles, NVRA agencies.
  • 3. Deadlines

  • In person/mail: 30 days before Election Day.
  • Online: 20 days before Election Day.
  • 4. ID Requirements

  • LA DL/ID or last 4 of SSN at registration.
  • At the polls: photo ID required (La. R.S. § 18:562) — LA DL, LA special ID card, US military ID, or other government photo ID. Voters without ID may sign an affidavit and cast a ballot.
  • 5. College Students

  • May register at school address; LA-issued student/employee photo IDs from LSU and similar accepted, out-of-state IDs not.
