How long do I have to register a vehicle in Washington?

Washington registration is administered by the Department of Licensing (DOL) through county auditor offices and licensing agents.

1. Deadlines

  • New residents: 30 days from moving to WA (RCW 46.16A.140).
  • Purchased vehicle: 15 days to title; 45 days to register (RCW 46.12.650).
  • Active military exemption: keep home-state registration.
  • 2. Required Documents

  • Vehicle title (out-of-state title accepted; lienholder title with affidavit).
  • Vehicle Title Application (Form TD-420-001).
  • Proof of WA insurance: 25/50/10 minimum (RCW 46.30.020).
  • WA driver license or other photo ID.
  • VIN inspection at licensing office for all out-of-state vehicles ($50 fee).
  • Odometer disclosure for vehicles under 20 years.
  • 3. Fees

  • Title fee: $15 + $50 service fee.
  • Registration: $30 base + RTA tax (Sound Transit district) up to 1.1% of value.
  • EV annual fee: $150 + $75 transportation electrification fee = $225/year (RCW 46.17.323).
  • Hybrid fee: $75/year.
  • Sales/Use tax: 6.5% state + local (Seattle: 10.35%).
  • Weight fee: $25 to $72 by class.
  • License service fee: $0.75.
  • 4. Penalties

  • Late registration: $10 to $50 depending on duration; $75 over 60 days.
  • Driving without insurance: $550 minimum fine, mandatory SR-22 for 3 years (RCW 46.30.020).
  • Late title: $50 penalty + $2/day up to $125.
  • 5. No Inspections

    Washington's emissions check program ended January 1, 2020. No annual safety inspection.

    6. Online Renewal

    Renew at dol.wa.gov. First-time titling and out-of-state transfers require in-person visit to a licensing office for VIN inspection.
