How long do I have to register a vehicle in Tennessee?

Tennessee registration is administered by the Tennessee Department of Revenue through county clerk offices.

1. Deadlines

  • New residents: 30 days from establishing residency (T.C.A. § 55-4-101).
  • Purchased vehicle: 30 days to title and register (T.C.A. § 55-3-114).
  • Failure to register: misdemeanor + late penalty.
  • 2. Required Documents

  • Vehicle title (signed by seller, or out-of-state title).
  • Application for Title and Registration.
  • Proof of TN insurance: 25/50/15 minimum (T.C.A. § 55-12-102).
  • Valid driver license or photo ID.
  • Odometer disclosure for vehicles under 20 years.
  • Notarized bill of sale if buying private party (some counties).
  • 3. Fees

  • Title fee: $14 + $5.50 transfer.
  • Registration fee: $26.50 base passenger ($28 with TN Specialty plate).
  • County clerk fee: $1.
  • Sales tax: 7% state + 2.25% to 2.75% local (capped at $1,600 base + 2.75% on next $1,600).
  • EV annual fee: $200 (T.C.A. § 55-4-116).
  • Hybrid annual fee: $100.
  • Wheel tax: varies by county ($25 to $75).
  • 4. Penalties

  • Late registration: $5 penalty + $4/month up to original fee amount.
  • Driving without registration: Class C misdemeanor.
  • Lapsed insurance: $25 reinstatement fee + possible $300 fine (T.C.A. § 55-12-139).
  • 5. Inspections

    No annual safety inspection. Emissions inspections were eliminated statewide effective January 14, 2022 (former programs in Davidson, Hamilton, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson, Wilson counties ended).

    6. Online Renewal

    Renewals via county clerk websites and Tennessee Motor Vehicle Online Renewal. Initial registration requires in-person visit to county clerk.
