How long do I have to register a vehicle in Ohio?

Ohio registration is run by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) through county Title Offices and Deputy Registrars.

1. Deadlines

  • New residents: 30 days from establishing residency (R.C. § 4503.10).
  • Purchased vehicle: 30 days to obtain Ohio title (R.C. § 4505.06).
  • Lease: Same 30-day window.
  • 2. Required Documents

  • Out-of-state title (or memorandum title if held by lienholder).
  • Out-of-state vehicle inspection (BMV 1173) signed by Ohio deputy registrar or licensed dealer — required for all out-of-state vehicles.
  • Proof of insurance: 25/50/25 minimum (R.C. § 4509.20).
  • Photo ID (Ohio license required to register).
  • Application for Certificate of Title (BMV 3774).
  • Sales/use tax form (STEC-V) if purchased out-of-state.
  • 3. Fees

  • Title fee: $15.
  • Registration: $34.50 base passenger.
  • EV surcharge: $200/year (R.C. § 4503.10(C)).
  • PHEV surcharge: $150/year.
  • Local/permissive tax: $5 to $30 by county/municipality.
  • Sales tax: 5.75% state + 0.25% to 2.25% local.
  • 4. Penalties

  • Late title application: $5 fee if filed 30+ days late.
  • Driving without registration: minor misdemeanor, fine up to $150.
  • Driving without insurance: license suspension 90 days minimum + SR-22 for 3 years.
  • 5. Emissions Testing (E-Check)

    Required biennially in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties (model years up to 25 years old, gasoline). Other counties exempt.

    6. Online Renewal

    Renew at OHID portal (BMV Online Services). Initial registrations and out-of-state transfers must be done at a county Title Office.
