How long do I have to register a vehicle in Louisiana?

Louisiana registration is administered by the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) under the Department of Public Safety.

1. Deadlines

  • New residents: 30 days from establishing residency (La. R.S. 32:707).
  • Purchased vehicle: 40 days to title; late penalty up to $30 plus interest.
  • Driver license must be obtained within 30 days.
  • 2. Required Documents

  • Vehicle title (notarized assignment required in Louisiana — notable difference from most states).
  • Notarized Act of Sale / Bill of Sale (DPSMV 1799).
  • Application for Vehicle Registration (Form DPSMV 1799).
  • Proof of Louisiana insurance: 15/30/25 minimum (La. R.S. 32:900).
  • Valid Louisiana driver license.
  • Power of attorney (Form 1664) if title is held by lienholder.
  • 3. Fees

  • Title fee: $68.50.
  • Registration fee: $20 to $82 based on value.
  • Handling fee: $8.
  • License plate fee: $3.
  • EV annual fee: $110 (La. R.S. 47:463.5, enacted 2022, effective 2023).
  • Hybrid annual fee: $60.
  • Sales/Use tax: 4.45% state + local (up to 11.45% in some parishes).
  • 4. Penalties

  • Late title (>40 days): $15 + $5/month, max $30.
  • Operating uninsured: $500 to $1,000 fine + impoundment (La. R.S. 32:863.1).
  • Expired registration: $50 to $250 fine.
  • 5. Inspections

    Statewide safety (brake tag) inspection eliminated effective August 1, 2024. Some local jurisdictions may retain. Emissions required biennially in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston, and West Baton Rouge parishes.

    6. Online Renewal

    Renew at expresslane.org. Initial titling requires in-person OMV office visit due to notarization requirements.
