North Carolina's marriage licenses are issued by the Register of Deeds and require no waiting period.

1. Where to Apply

  • The Register of Deeds in any North Carolina county (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 51-8).
  • Both parties must appear together; license valid statewide.
  • 2. ID and Documents

  • Government-issued photo ID and Social Security number.
  • Previously married: certified divorce decree or death certificate.
  • 3. Fees

  • $60 statewide.
  • 4. Waiting Period and Expiration

  • No waiting period — issued same day.
  • License valid for 60 days from issuance (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 51-8).
  • 5. Age and Residency

  • 18 minimum. 16-17 may marry with parental consent only if the partner is within 4 years of age (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 51-2, reformed 2021). Under 16 prohibited.
  • No residency requirement.
  • 6. Blood Test and Same-Sex Marriage

  • No blood test required.
