How do I get a concealed carry permit in Minnesota?

Minnesota regulates concealed carry under the Minnesota Personal Protection Act, Minn. Stat. § 624.714, administered by the sheriff of the county where the applicant resides.

1. Eligibility (§ 624.714 subd. 2)

  • At least 21 years old.
  • Minnesota resident (or non-resident with substantial connection to Minnesota for non-resident permit).
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law.
  • No felony or "crime of violence" conviction.
  • No drug or alcohol commitment in past 10 years.

  • State-certified firearms training course — typically 8 hours classroom + live-fire qualification with at least 20 rounds.
  • Course must be taught by an instructor certified by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
  • Refresher training required for every renewal.
  • 3. Application

  • Apply at your county sheriff's office.
  • Submit application form, training certificate, two passport photos, and fee.
