Can I Return a Used Car?
Unlike many consumer purchases, buying a used car generally does not come with a right to return it. However, several legal protections may apply.
No federal cooling-off period. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule (which gives you 3 days to cancel certain purchases) does NOT apply to vehicles.
State protections:
When you may be able to return a used car:
"As is" sales. Buying "as is" generally means you accept the car in its current condition, but "as is" does not protect the dealer from fraud claims.
Dealer vs. private sale. You have fewer protections when buying from a private seller. Implied warranties typically do not apply.
Steps to take. Review the contract, check your state's specific protections, document defects, and contact the dealer in writing.
