Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funds Bridge and Highway Projects Nationwide

The Federal Highway Administration announced over $40 billion in formula funding to states for fiscal year 2024 under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Major projects include bridge replacement programs, highway modernization, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and broadband deployment in underserved areas.

The IIJA, signed in November 2021, authorized $1.2 trillion in spending including $550 billion in new investments. As of early 2024, over 56,000 projects have been announced or are underway across all 50 states. The law requires compliance with Buy America provisions for iron, steel, and construction materials.

Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements apply to all federally funded projects, and new guidance has expanded covered workers and classifications.

Practical Impact

Construction companies and materials suppliers should monitor state DOT project pipelines. Buy America requirements create opportunities for domestic manufacturers but compliance challenges for importers. Davis-Bacon compliance is under increased enforcement scrutiny. Local governments should apply for competitive grant programs with upcoming deadlines.
