Various subsidiaries of BP America Inc. violated the financial assurance requirements at their hazardous waste facilities. Financial assurance ensures that money is available to properly close a facility that treats, stores, or disposes of hazardous waste and to clean up any hazardous waste that is released at these facilities. The regulations also require these facilities to have financial assurance to cover any damage to adjacent property owners and others who are harmed by a release.
