Case summary
On May 27, 2025, Region 10 filed and Expedited Settlement Agreement (ESA) resolving violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) by Walmart at their Supercenter #4359 located in Anchorage, Alaska. On August 10, 2023, EPA Region 10 conducted an unannounced inspected of the Walmart #4359 Supercenter and documented violations concerning their failure to fully characterize a hazardous waste at the point of generation, applying all appropriate labels to containers of hazardous waste, and submitting exception reports on at least 15 instances when their hazardous waste was stuck in transit over 60 days. To return to compliance Walmart has instituted new training for store personnel to improve the on-site management of hazardous waste and taken steps to improve waste tracking. The company also agreed to pay a penalty of $20,000.
