EPA v. ALASKA REGIONAL HOSPITAL
Final Order With Penalty
Case summary
On December 17, 2020, Region 10 settled with Alaska Regional Hospital of Anchorage, Alaska, for violations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The implementing regulations of RCRA require generators of solid waste to determine if the waste is hazardous, and requires that generators of hazardous waste manage the hazardous waste in compliance with the RCRA requirements in order to protect human health and the environment. EPA alleges that Alaska Regional Hospital failed to determine that 10 containers of solid waste were listed hazardous waste, stored hazardous waste without a storage permit, failed to submit the required Biennial Report, failed to properly manage non-creditable hazardous waste pharmaceuticals, and failed to properly manage universal waste. Alaska Regional Hospital will pay a penalty of $32,429.
