EPA v. Department of Energy - Hanford (FF)
Final Order With Penalty
Case summary
On January 27, 2015, Region 10 settled with the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Site (Energy) in Richland, Washington for violations of RCRA. The violations include the failure to comply with a June 2013 RCRA consent agreement and final order (CAFO), as well as violations identified during RCRA hazardous waste inspections conducted by EPA in August 2013. Specifically, the closure plan Energy submitted pursuant to the June 2013 CAFO did not include all required information, and the August 2013 inspection found 136 drums of hazardous waste stored in an unpermitted area of the facility. Energy has shipped the drums of hazardous waste for treatment and disposal and will be re-submitting the closure plan to the Washington State Department of Ecology. Energy agreed to pay a penalty of $44,722.
