Case summary
Pursuant to Section 309(a) of the Clean Water Act, EPA Region 10 has issued a compliance order to the City of Wapato, Washington (City) for violations of the City's NPDES permit (Permit Number WA0050229). The City failed to meet a previous compliance schedule for ammonia and continues to be unable to meet the ammonia effluent limit in the City's newly issued permit. The wastewater treatment facility is part of a sanitary sewer system that receives wastewater from residential and commercial sources discharging into WIP Drain 2 which flows into the Yakima River. The compliance order requires the City to begin facility upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant by September 1, 2014 and achieve compliance with the effluent limits in the Permit by December 1, 2015.
