Case summary

U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska Enters Consent Decree for BP Exploration Alaska (BPXA) Violations of Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and Federal Pipeline Safety Laws. On July 13, 2011, the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska entered a Consent Decree in United States v. BP Exploration Alaska, settling claims for violation of the oil spill provisions of the Clean Water Act, the asbestos management requirements of the Clean Air Act, and the federal pipeline safety laws. BPXA agreed to pay a penalty of $25 million, of which approximately $20 million will go to the federal Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund. In addition, BPXA is implementing approximately $60 million in injunctive relief, which includes development and implementation of a system-wide pipeline integrity management program.
