EPA v. Snake River Mobile Home Park Public Water System

Case summary

On October 9, 2025, EPA issued the Order under section l414 of the SDWA based on a determination that the System violated EPA's National Primary Drinking Water Regulation. A nitrate MCL violation exists when the average of an initial sample and a confirmation sample exceeds 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L). High nitrate levels may cause methemoglobinemia (aka blue baby syndrome) in infants 6 months old and younger. On September 9, 2025, EPA was notified that the average of the routine and confirmation sample was 11.6 mg/L. The Order requires the Respondent to keep the public notice posted that informs the public not to give water to infants, keep the public notification posted until notified by EPA, update the public notification quarterly as long as the MCL violation persists, provide EPA with a plan and schedule that outlines actions to address the current and future nitrate contamination at the System, and perform any necessary corrective actions (e.g., install treatment to address the nitrate contamination).
