Final Order With Penalty
Case summary
On June 25-27, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act program conducted an inspection at Spirit Aerosystems, Inc., 3801 South Oliver, Wichita, Kansas. The inspection found that the facility had failed to meet several RCRA large quantity generator requirements including: closing, labeling, dating, maintaining adequate aisle space, and separating incompatible wastes for hazardous waste containers; maintaining documentation of the hazardous waste training and job descriptions for hazardous waste personnel; ensuring employees are initially and annually trained; minimizing the possibility of a release of hazardous waste by failing to accumulate hazardous waste in containers; failing to provide an adequate RCRA contingency plan which includes a list of emergency equipment and evacuation routes for facility personnel; closing, labeling, and documenting length of accumulation of universal waste batteries and lamps; and marking used oil tanks with the words, ?Used Oil,? cleaning up used oil releases, and ensuring used oil tanks are free of leaks. As a result of these violations, the EPA has determined that Spirit Aerosystems, Inc. should pay a penalty of $189,000.
