EPA v. The Geo Group (NMU001798)
Final Order With Penalty
Case summary
The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) received a call from the State Engineer who reported a manhole overflowing into the Pecos River in Santa Rosa, NM. An inspection was conducted on the line that ran from the Guadalupe County Prison collection system to the Santa Rosa collection system. There was evidence of a discharge to the Pecos River, but there was no evidence of a fish kill nor was there evidence that drinking water downstream had been effected. Repairs to the line were completed July 17, 2012. An administrative complaint was mailed to the Geo Group, Inc., the company that runs the private prison. A Consent Agreement Final Order was issued April 25, 2013, and the Geo Group agreed to pay a penalty of $27,000.00.
