EPA v. ALLIED IRON AND STEEL CO

Case summary

U.S. EPA Region 5 issued an Administrative Consent Order (ACO) and Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO) to Allied Iron and Steel Company (Allied) to resolve violations of the Clean Air Act (CAA). EPA alleged that Allied accepted for recycling small appliances, such as refrigerators and room air conditioners, and motor vehicle air conditioners that once contained ozone-depleting refrigerants, without verifying that the refrigerant had been properly recovered prior to sale to Allied, in violation of regulations found at 40 CFR 82.156. Allied has accepted the proposed penalty and entered into a CAFO to resolve this matter.
