EPA v. KOENIG AND VITS, INC.
Final Order No Penalty
Case summary
Koenig & Vits receives aluminum scrap from scrap yards that have been known to contain materials contaminated with paints and oils. In response to alleged violations of the secondary aluminum NESHAP associated with charging dirty scrap into its melting furnaces, the company agreed to make changes to its scrap inspection procedures to assure that contaminated scrap will be less likely to be charged into its melting furnaces. There is no data pertaining to past or current dioxin/furans emissions caused by charging dirty scrap, which the company denies ever doing, nor for any anticipated emission reductions associated with upgrading the company's scrap management procedures.
