On October 6, 2003, at 0345 Central Time, a truck owned and operated by Ruan Transport Corporation, 666 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa had a 668 pound release of ferrous chloride. The release occurred near mile marker 131 on I-80 East in La Grange, Illinois. The truck ran off the road and overturned, and the ferrous chloride leaked from a hole caused by the accident. Ferrous chloride is a CERCLA hazardous substance with a reportable quantity of 100 pounds. This release was 6.68 times the reportable quantity. The NRC was called at 1110 central time on October 6, 2003. This call was made by Matthew Martelli of ECS, not from Ruan Transport Corporation.
