EPA v. NATIONAL STEEL CORP./GRANITE CITY DIV.
Superseded by Another Enforcement Action
Case summary
U.S EPA, NEIC and R5, conducted a multimedia inspection at the National Steel Granite City Works facility. The case was combined into a single action which included two other National Steel facilities. National Steel filed for banruptcy and was purchased by US Steel. US Steel purchased all of the Granite City works with the exception of the solid waste landfill. The landfill was separated out of the action due to the purchase arrangement between National Steel and US Steel. A Separate Consent Decee was issued to National Steel which dealth only with the landfill issues. National Steel is to supply a closure plan for the landfill to the Illinois EPA. A civil penalty was assessed but is unlikely to ever get collected due to the bankruptcy and demise of National Steel.
