BERKSHIRE FOODS IS A MEAT-COOLING OPERATION. ON JANUARY 5, 1989, APPROX. 2,000 LBS OF ANHYDROUS AMMONIA WERE RELEA- SED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE DUE TO A MALFUNCTION IN A REFRIGERA- TION UNIT. AS A RESULT OF THIS RELEASE, FIFTY PEOPLE WERE EVACUATED AND TWO POLICE OFFICERS WERE TREATED AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL.
