Case summary

On September 2, 2025, Region 3 filed a Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO), simultaneously commencing and concluding an administrative enforcement action, against Canam Steel Corporation for violations of RCRA C and the Maryland federally authorized hazardous waste program at the open web steel joists and a variety of steel deck products manufacturing facility located at 4010 Clay Street, Point of Rocks, MD 21777 (the Facility ). The violations alleged include operating without a permit or interim status; failure to make hazardous waste determinations; failure to keep containers of hazardous waste closed; failure to maintain and operate the Facility; and failure to provide air emission control for hazardous waste containers subject to Subpart CC. Violations such as these can potentially lead to hazardous waste entering the environment which can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Taking actions against such violations aligns with Pillar 1 of the Powering the Great American Comeback initiative as it addresses access to clean air, land, and water. The settlement requires Canam Steel Corporation to certify that it is now in compliance with applicable hazardous waste requirements and to pay a $212,017.00 penalty. The EPA notified the Maryland Department of the Environment in advance of this action, and the Department had no objections.
