EPA v. THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY - FOGGY BOTTOM)
Final Order With Penalty
Case summary
On April 1, 2020 the Regional Judicial Officer signed a Final Order ratifying a Consent Agreement between EPA and The George Washington University (GWU), located in Washington, DC. The Consent Agreement resolves alleged violations of RCRA C identified during a March 2019 EPA inspection of the GWU's Foggy Bottom campus. The hazardous waste management regulations promulgated pursuant to RCRA Subtitle C provide for the management and transport of hazardous waste from the time and place of generation to its ultimate disposition at a RCRA treatment, storage or disposal facility. EPA routinely inspects hazardous waste generators for compliance with RCRA regulations in accordance with joint enforcement goals agreed upon by EPA and states authorized to implement RCRA C. The alleged RCRA C violations chiefly concern discarded art materials (solvents, lead and selenium containing material) stored in the art department. This action resulted in alleged violations stemming for poor container management, as well as labeling, dating, manifesting and universal waste violations. GWU will pay a $35,840 penalty.
