Case summary
On April 16, 2018, EPA Region III filed a Consent Agreement and Final Order simultaneously commencing and concluding an administrative enforcement action against Hunt & Walsh, Inc. (Respondent) for alleged violations of TSCA and EPA?s RRP Rule in connection with a renovation at the University Towers, two 15-story brick high-rise condominium buildings located in suburban Silver Springs, Maryland. Respondent, a Virginia corporation that generally performs commercial and institutional remodeling, repair, painting and wall covering services, was hired to work under the supervision of a general contractor, HBW Properties, Inc., as a subcontractor performing paint preparation renovation and painting activities to building components located in common areas of the two University Towers condominium buildings. Alleged violations included failing to obtain a lead-safe firm certification and use lead-certified renovators to perform the renovation activities, failing to comply with various interior lead dust containment work practice standards and employing restricted work practices. Under the terms of the CAFO, Respondent will pay a civil penalty of $15,000. The Virginia Department of Health?s Lead-Safe Virginia Program was notified and did not object to this action.
