The fire resulted in the release of the contents of the trailer, which included chromium, hexavalent chromium, and silver nitrate, to the soil along I-81 and to a nearby stream. After initial responses by LIG and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, EPA=s emergency removal action began on February 22, 2005, and included excavation of 222 tons of soil from the area of the truck fire and along I-81, as well as removal of approximately 40,000 gallons of water from the stream.
