Case summary

On February 3, 2026, EPA and the Navy finalized a Record of Decision (ROD) for UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) 21, Combat Area C Field Firing Range at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command (Quantico) Superfund Site. The remedial objective for the ROD at UXO 21 is to reduce the potential explosive hazard related to human receptors encountering Munitions and Explosives of Concern at the surface or in the subsurface at UXO 021. The site includes a day-care center and school. The selected remedies at UXO 21 include: (a) surface and focused subsurface munitions removals (b) design and implementation of LUCs for surface and subsurface soil use, (c) engineering controls to include installation of warning signs at all access entry points into UXO 21 regarding potential for encountering munitions items and (d) performance of Five-Year Reviews to periodically evaluate the ongoing protectiveness of the remedy. The remedial design for UXO 21 is currently scheduled for completion in 2027, with LUCs expected to be implemented in 2029.
