EPA v. Borough of Ringwood

Final Order With Unspecified Cost Recovery

Case summary

On November 10, 2010 an Administrative Settlement Agreement and Order on Consent was signed by the Respondent and EPA regarding the Ringwood Mines/Landfill Superfund Site. The Settlement Agreement requires the Respondent to perform a soils investigation of the St. Georges Pit Area (“SGP Area”) of the Ringwood Mines/Landfill Superfund Site located in the Borough of Ringwood, Passaic County, New Jersey and to reimburse EPA for future response costs incurred by EPA in connection with the performance of the soil investigation activities at the SGP Area. The St. Georges Pit Area is located in the central portion of the Site, northwest of Cannon Mine Road. The SGP Area consists of the former St George, New Miller and Miller Pits, which have been filled with solid waste, and several adjacent acres. The soils investigation will require the installation of test trenches to characterize the nature and extent of fill material, the collection and analysis of samples of waste material encountered during installation of test trenches, and the collection of soil samples from beneath observed waste materials.
