EPA v. MEDFIELD

Case summary

On September 6, 2022, EPA issued an administrative order (Order) to the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts requiring the Town to take actions to meet its effluent limits for BOD, TSS, aluminum, and phosphorus at its wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The facility is in significant non-compliance (SNC) for failing to meet its NPDES permit effluent limits for these pollutants. The Order requires that the Town repair its Dynasand filter, second primary clarifier, and ultraviolet disinfection mechanism by certain deadlines. The Order also requires the Town to provide EPA and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) with a monthly progress report describing actions taken to improve the WWTP's operations with respect to meeting its NPDES permit effluent limits. Finally, the Order requires the Town to meet all effluent limitations by January 31, 2023. The Region worked in close coordination with MADEP in this matter.
