EPA v. LIGHTLIFE FOODS (GREENLEAF FOODS SPC)
Case summary
On January 24, 2020, Region 1 issued a Clean Water Act Administrative Compliance Order (Order) to Greenleaf Foods, SPC (d/b/a Lightlife Foods) for violations of pretreatment regulations and, specifically, for low pH discharges to the Town of Montague, Massachusetts sewer system. The company operates a food manufacturing facility and discharges wastewaters to the Towns publicly operated treatment works in violation of the pH pretreatment standard. Wastewaters with a pH less than 5.0 S.U. have the potential to corrode piping in both the collection system and treatment plant. The order requires that the company achieve compliance with the pH pretreatment standard. The Region coordinated closely with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
