Case summary
On July 3, 2019, the Region issued an Administrative Compliance Order requiring the Town of Johnston, Rhode Island to address discharges of untreated wastewater to the Woonasquatucket River, Assapumpset Brook, and the Pocasset River, without authorization of a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, from the Town's sanitary sewer collection system in violation of section 301(a) of the Clean Water Act. The order also addresses noncompliance with certain conditions in the State of Rhode Island Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System permit. The Region worked in close coordination with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management in this matter.
