Case summary

On October 6, 2017, EPA entered into an administrative order on consent with the Town of Barre, MA to address exceedences of the copper and aluminum limits in its NPDES permit. Copper and Aluminum are toxic to aquatic organisms at certain concentrations. The Town?s NPDES Permit, effective in June 1, 2013, contained copper and aluminum limits that went into effect on June 1, 2017. The treatment plant was not able to meet these limits based on its current configuration and operation procedures. EPA is responsible for implementing the Clean Water Act in MA, but the Region did work in close coordination with the MA Department of Environmental Protection in this matter
