The court of appeals dismissed this appeal because it found a procedurally improper Rule 59(e) motion did not stay the deadline for filing the appeal. As we did twenty-one years ago in Elam v. S.C. Department of Transportation, we hold the court of appeals in this case \extended the holdings and rationale of [our prior] cases in a manner which unnecessarily complicates post-trial and appellate practice.\ We reverse the court of appeals, reinstate the appeal, and remand to the court of appeals for its review of the merits of the appeal.
