State v. Robert Rego

Syllabus

The defendant, Robert Rego, appealed from a judgment of conviction rendered after a jury trial in Providence County Superior Court, which reflected the fact that he had been found guilty of three counts related to a shooting in January of 2017 in Central Falls, Rhode Island. On appeal, the defendant averred that the trial justice erred by denying his motion for a new trial. He claimed that the trial justice: (1) overlooked a key piece of evidence and (2) mistakenly credited certain witness testimony. The Supreme Court held that the trial justice did not err in weighing the evidence or in assessing the credibility of witnesses. The Court further held that the trial justice properly denied the defendant's motion for a new trial. Accordingly, the Supreme Court affirmed the judgment of the Superior Court.
