Abstract of Proposed Collection
Under Section 101(a)(27)(A) of the Immigration and Nationality Act
(INA), 8 U.S.C. 1101, and INA section 203(b)(4), an alien may be issued
a special immigrant visa as a returning resident if he or she is an
immigrant, previously admitted as a lawful permanent resident or
conditional resident, who is returning from a temporary visit abroad of
more than one year due to circumstances beyond his or her control. The
DS-117 is used to collect the information necessary to determine a
returning resident's eligibility for such a visa.
Methodology
Aliens will submit the DS-117 electronically via email, or they
will print the form and submit it in person to a U.S. embassy or
consulate abroad.

Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Department of
State.
