AGENCY: Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)/Chief
Financial Officer, Department of Defense (DoD).
ACTION: 30-Day information collection notice.

SUMMARY: The DoD has submitted to the Office of Management and Budget
(OMB) for clearance the following proposal for collection of
information under the provisions of the Paperwork Reduction Act.
DATES: Consideration will be given to all comments received by August
21, 2024.

Voucher for Death Gratuity Payment; DD Form 397; OMB Control Number
0730-0017
Type of Request: Extension.
Number of Respondents: 500.
Responses per Respondent: 1.
Annual Responses: 500.
Average Burden per Response: 30 minutes.
Annual Burden Hours: 250.
Needs and Uses: The information collection requirement allows the
government to collect the signatures and information needed to pay a
death gratuity. Pursuant to 10 U.S.C. 1475-1480, a designated
beneficiary or next-of-kin can receive a death gratuity payment for a
deceased service member. This form serves as a record of the
disbursement. The DoD Financial Management Regulation (FMR), Volume 7A,
Chapter 36, defines the eligible beneficiaries and procedures for
payment. To provide internal controls for this benefit, and to comply
with the above-cited statutes, the information requested is needed to
substantiate the receipt of the benefit.
