How long do I have to register a vehicle in Texas?

Texas registration is administered by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) through county tax assessor-collector offices.

1. Deadlines

  • New residents: 30 days from moving to Texas (Tex. Transp. Code § 502.040).
  • Purchased vehicle: 30 days from the date of sale to title and register (§ 501.145).
  • Failure to title within 30 days triggers a $25 penalty plus $25/month, capped at $250.
  • 2. Required Documents

  • Signed vehicle title (or out-of-state title and registration).
  • Form 130-U (Application for Texas Title and/or Registration).
  • Proof of insurance meeting Texas 30/60/25 minimums.
  • Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) — required only in 17 emissions counties (Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, El Paso, Austin) as of 2025.
  • VIN verification (Form VTR-270) if registering an out-of-state vehicle in person at the county office.
  • Valid Texas driver license.
  • 3. Fees

  • Registration fee: $50.75 (passenger ≤6,000 lbs); $54 for trucks.

  • Local/county fees: $11.50 average (varies by county).
  • TexasSure insurance verification: $1.
  • Sales tax: 6.25% of purchase price (or SPV — Standard Presumptive Value).
  • EV/PHEV annual fee: $200 (HB 3613, effective Sept 2023).
  • 4. Late Penalties

  • 30 to 60 days late: $25.
  • 61 to 90 days: $50.
  • Over 90 days: full citation; officer may impound.
  • 5. Online Renewal

    Renewals available at Texas.gov; first-time titling and out-of-state transfers must be done at the county office.

    6. 2025 Safety Inspection Change

    Effective Jan 1, 2025, Texas eliminated the annual non-commercial safety inspection statewide (HB 3297). Emissions testing still applies in covered counties.
