How do I file for unemployment benefits in Massachusetts?

Federal & State Law Editorial TeamLast reviewed: 2026-04-30

Massachusetts unemployment is administered by the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) under Mass. Gen. Laws Ch. 151A.

1. How and When to File

  • File online at mass.gov/unemployment via UI Online.
  • File the first week of unemployment — claims start the Sunday of the filing week.
  • A one-week waiting period applies (with limited exceptions).
  • 2. Weekly Benefit Amount

  • Range: $51 to $1,033 per week (2025) — the highest cap in the United States.
  • Plus $25 per dependent, up to 50% of your WBA — total max benefits can exceed $1,500/week with 5+ dependents.
  • Calculated as ~50% of your average weekly wage in two highest quarters.
  • Maximum 30 weeks of regular benefits — the longest in the country (most states cap at 26).
  • 3. Eligibility Requirements (M.G.L. Ch. 151A § 24)

  • At least $6,300 in base-period wages (2025).
  • Total base-period wages of at least 30× the WBA.
  • Lost work through no fault of your own — not discharged for deliberate misconduct in willful disregard of employer's interest (§ 25(e)(2)) or voluntary quit without good cause attributable to the employer.
  • Be capable of, available for, and actively seeking work.
  • 4. Work Search Requirement

  • Must conduct at least 3 work search activities per week.
  • Must register on MassHire JobQuest within 2 weeks.
  • Keep a written log.
  • 5. Certifying for Benefits

  • Certify weekly through UI Online or TeleCert.
  • Earnings up to 1/3 of your WBA are disregarded.
  • 6. Appeals

  • Appeal within 10 days of the determination notice — extremely short deadline.
  • Hearings are conducted by DUA Review Examiners.
